August 5, 2020

The Leadership Council met on Tuesday, August 4, to review our COVID response plans with current benchmarks:

  • The number of cases in Hennepin County continues to go up
  • Schools near us are going to hybrid or distance learning only

The Leadership Council therefore has approved this plan:

Live stream of Sunday worship services will continue.  There are no plans to bring the congregation back into the sanctuary for worship at this time due to the spread of COVID-19. A new option to call in from one’s phone to listen to the worship service has been added, as a way for those who may not have access to a computer to worship (see information below). There will be opportunities to come together outside for worship services. The first outdoor service was held on August 5. Watch for information about future outdoor worship services.

Adult Small Groups run on a hybrid model.  This means that most groups will meet virtually. Because adults are able to socially distance and wear masks, small groups of 10 or less may meet in-person either outdoors, indoors at the church, in someone’s yard/a park etc. This is the first type of group we see using the church building for activity.

Youth Ministry will run on a hybrid model.  Youth and leaders will gather for outdoor activities, practicing good social distancing, wearing masks, and using good hygiene. Some youth activities and small groups will operate virtually.

Children’s ministries will not meet in person at this time.  Children’s choirs will not meet. The risks and challenges of leading in-person children’s ministry were too high. The Children’s Ministry Team is planning some safe and fun outdoor activities for children.

The building is not yet available for outside groups.

Lake Harriet United Methodist Preschool will hold in-person classes.  Their classes are all under ten students per room. The classes will not intermix, and separate entrances will be used to mitigate any potential spread of the virus. The preschool falls under the state guidelines for childcare.

The Leadership Council will review these plans again in October.

We welcome your prayers, encouragement, questions and suggestions.
